“A rousing spy melodrama . . . for anyone who cannot resist history’s ‘what might have beens'“ -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

A kidnapping that may deliver the world to Nazi domination.

Deputy Führer Rudolph Hess, long presumed a defector from Hitler’s inner circle, is in fact the deadliest double-agent of the war.

November 1942. American and German scientists race to produce the first atomic bomb, a weapon each side fervently hopes will win them the war. Hess, a prisoner of the British, is flown to the United States to be interrogated by Enrico Fermi, the brilliant scientist working on the vast secret project to create an atomic bomb. Little does Fermi know that with the help of hidden Nazi agents and ruthless SS commandos, Hess plots to kidnap him for his knowledge on atomic power for Germany.

American Agent John Crown trips across a puzzle that reveals Hess to be an espionage mastermind instead of the addle-brained defector the press paints him to be. Crown and Hess race toward a deadly confrontation that will determine whether the Nazis may get the bomb. The fate of the free world hangs above a nightmare abyss of intrigue and violence.

The Hess Cross eBook James Thayer Reviews

Sophomoric plot with strained motivations and action rationales, Inferior to his other novel White Star. I was very, very disappointed
The story revolves around a plot to kidnap Enrico Fermi from his lab at the University of Chicago.
The book starts out quite good but as all the plot elements come together the story becomes
very hard to believe. The actions and assumptions of the characters begin to lose credibility as the story
progresses.
The book is well written - the story flows nicely and there is plenty of action.
I am very surprised that I have not seen any reviews for this book. And admittedly it sat on my shelf for several months. I am only 3/4 finsihed with it but none-the-less the plot is very intriguing. We are told of Nazi-party member Rudolph Hess and his crossing to England in 1942. Was he "mad" or was it all a ploy? Ultimately the drama leads to Chicago. At this point the story really envelopes and becomes interesting to me. It is almost a combination of the "Untouchables" and a spy-thriller. Is Thayer from Chi-town? Because his description of the city is very accurate and I found this very interesting. He illustrates street names, restaurants, neighborhoods that someone from the area can appreciate. Well done.

Other tags you find in the book Enrico Fermie, atomic fission, University of Chi. Chicago Police, U-boat. Nazi party, commandos, "underworld".

I still have to finish reading but I doubt the remainder will disappoint.
An interesting read if one suspends known history...but that's what fiction requires...a bit of imagination. There were a couple of factual errors though they played no role in the fictionalized story.

I rarely read fiction but this caught my attention because I had the distasteful opportunity to serve as commander of the guard at Spandau Prison for a short period in 1972.

Contrary to the book's endnote, Hess commited suicide by hanging on August 17,1987 at the age lof 93.
I liked the plot as I lived through the World War II era and remember Rudolf Hess's flight to England
Interesting combo of history and fiction to deliver a plausible explanation of Hess's defection from Germany during the height of the war. Twists, turns and surprises along the way. Amusing and easy read.
Interesting twist on Rudolph Hess going to Scotland
